Founded in 1999, Planet-Numbers helps connect the world for less through its award-winning access number service (Planet-Numbers has already picked up the Best Business Award and Global Business Excellence Award in 2009). Planet-Numbers is a great, versatile service that allows customers to pick up fantastic savings when using landlines, mobiles or even phoneboxes. With coverage that extends to more than 200 countries around the world and covering both mobiles and landlines in those countries, Planet-Numbers is a great, no-fuss option that we’re sure many of our readers will enjoy using.
Planet-Numbers is a simple service that works using ‘access numbers’. In order to make a call using the service, customers simply enter the relevant country’s access number before dialling the number they wish to call. In this way, the call ceases to be dealt with by the customer’s regular service provider and is instead managed by Planet-Numbers, allowing the customer to tap into great per-minute rates that just aren’t available through regular means. As the service works through access numbers, there are no compatibility issues and no pre-payments necessary – Planet-Numbers works with any phone (without the need to swap SIM cards or change service providers) and the cost of your call is simply added to your regular bill. Simple!
Although we were very impressed by how easy it is to make huge savings on international calls when using Planet-Numbers, there were a few things that let this service down or may make it unsuitable for some of our readers. Firstly, this service works entirely through access numbers, meaning it may not be ideal when using it on-the-go (such as from mobile phones) as customers will have to record a country’s individual access number alongside the number they are trying to call. While this may not be a huge problem if customers only use the service once or twice or for a particular country, if customers intend to use the service regularly they may find themselves drowning in access numbers! Secondly, the service doesn’t offer anything by way of web-telephony, nor is the service compatible with existing general VOIP services such as Skype, meaning customers who do not have a mobile phone or fixed landline cannot benefit from these discounts. Similarly, other services permit customers of that service to call each other for free, a benefit not offered here to Planet-Numbers customers.
Although there are a few problems with the Planet-Numbers service, particularly if you want access to VOIP and web-telephony services and the many benefits they bring, all-in-all it is a good no-fuss, no-frills option that offers great savings. Although there may be more straightforward services out there, particularly those that use mobile apps or integrated software (such as those that ranked higher in our top-ten in this category), Planet-Numbers may still be a good choice if all you want to do is make a few cheap international calls every now and again. If the bells and whistles don’t interest you, head over to Planet-Numbers to see what savings you could make on your next international call.
